Can You Wear Oud in an Indian Summer?

Ask most people in India when to wear oud and they'll say winter: wedding season, cold evenings, maybe Eid. That's fair. Traditional oud (agarwood) is dense, resinous and smoky, and in 40°C heat a heavy oud blend can feel like a woollen shawl in May.

We still wanted to wear oud all year. That's why we made Citrus Reverence, the oud made for Indian summers, and what we call India's first oud for summer.

Why oud feels heavy in hot weather

  • Heat makes fragrance evaporate faster. Warm skin pushes a perfume's molecules into the air more quickly, so dense notes come across louder and closer.
  • Resinous notes pile up. Oud, incense and amber are usually blended with other heavy materials like leather, rose and saffron. In humidity, that combination can feel cloying.
  • There's nothing to lift it. Without a fresh top layer, there's nothing to cool the first impression.

How Citrus Reverence is built for the heat

  • Opening: bergamot, citron, neroli and ginger. Bright, cool and a little spicy.
  • Heart: black tea and incense, for the depth people expect from oud, without the weight.
  • Base: ambrox, a clean amber-wood note that lasts without turning sticky.

Like every Khuloud spray, it's 40% perfume oil, so a little goes a long way. Two or three sprays are enough for an office day.

Five tips for wearing oud in summer

  1. Apply to moisturised skin. Fragrance holds better on hydrated skin than on dry skin.
  2. Go lighter in the morning. Spray once on the chest and once on the wrist, then add more in the evening if you like.
  3. Avoid direct sun on the spot you sprayed. The inside of the wrist or behind the ears works better than the neck in the open sun.
  4. Try the attar for close wear. The alcohol-free Citrus Reverence Attar sits closer to the skin, which suits tight spaces like offices and the metro.
  5. Layer it. Pair it with something fresher for the day, or warmer for the night (see our guide to layering perfumes).
