Why Your Perfume Fades Fast in Indian Heat (and How to Make It Last)

"It smelled great in the shop and vanished by lunch." That's one of the most common complaints about perfume in India. Here's what's going on, and what you can do about it.

Three reasons perfume disappears in the heat

  1. Heat speeds up evaporation. Perfume is a mix of molecules that evaporate at different rates. Warm skin and warm air push the light top notes off fastest, so the bright opening you liked in the shop is the first thing to go.
  2. Dry skin doesn't hold scent. Fragrance clings to oils on the skin. On dry skin there's less to hold onto.
  3. Low concentration. Many affordable sprays are eau de toilette, which has the least fragrance oil of the common types. Less oil means less to last.

What concentration means

Perfumes are graded by how much fragrance oil they contain. Commonly cited ranges are about 5–15% for eau de toilette, 15–20% for eau de parfum and 15–30% for parfum or extrait (source: Wikipedia). Khuloud perfume sprays are 40% perfume oil. See our concentration guide for the full comparison, including attars.

How to make any perfume last longer

  • Moisturise first. An unscented lotion gives fragrance something to hold onto.
  • Spray, don't rub. Rubbing your wrists together warms the skin and breaks up the top notes faster.
  • Use pulse points that stay covered. The inner elbow and the chest under a shirt are shielded from sun and wind.
  • Mist your clothes lightly. Fabric holds scent longer than skin. Test on a hidden spot first, because some oils can mark light fabrics.
  • Store bottles away from heat. A hot car or a sunny dressing table breaks perfume down over time. A cupboard is better.
  • Carry a 10 mL. A 10 mL travel size (₹499) for a top-up is easier than over-spraying in the morning.

A note on "nose blindness"

After an hour or two you stop noticing your own perfume, even when others still can. Before you re-spray, ask someone close by. You may be smelling less than everyone around you.
